The upgrade of the Overend Way junction (at the Balally Luas Station) in Dundrum included for the detailed design improvements to the operation of the access junction to Balally Luas station and local businesses including removing the existing exit onto Overend Way. The junction was altered to facilitate two-way traffic, improved pedestrian crossing points, and provides new on and off road cycle tracks along Overend Way and Overend Avenue to link with the Luas station.
Following appointment, CH2M Barry were set a 3 month window to carry out the detailed design phase which included the procurement of topographical survey. The team worked diligently to achieve this timeline and issued a set of contract documents and tender drawings to DLRCC on time. Subsequently, following review by the NTA, the brief was extended to include further improvements to cycle lane infrastructure further east along Overend Way to provide a greater level of service. This revised brief subsequently required additional survey work to be procured. During this time a Contractor was procured by DLRCC and the revised contract drawings were used to negotiate a revised tender sum to allow construction to proceed promptly.
The completed project was one of 2 projects within Dun Laoghaire Co Co area that were commended by the NTA and nominated as a project where a close out report should be prepared describing the history of the scheme and the lessons learned during the design phase. Furthermore as a result of this work, CH2M Barry were appointed to phase 2 of the project which extends the scheme towards Dundrum Shopping Centre and includes the upgrade of the busy Sandyford Rd/ Wyckham Way/ Overend Avenue signalised junction.
